The Family of Albert and Shirley Small

GW Award for Philanthropy

Albert H. Small was a third-generation Washingtonian, successful real estate developer, philanthropist, and a Monumental Alumnus of George Washington University. His extensive collection of rare books and manuscripts, inspired by his service in the Navy in World War II, became the foundation of The Albert H. Small Center for National Capital Area Studies at the GW Museum and The Textile Museum in 2011. In recognition of his contributions to GW, Mr. Small was granted the President’s Medal in 2011 and an honorary Doctor of Public Service degree in 2016. In 2019, he established the Albert H. Small Normandy Institute at the Columbian College of Arts & Sciences, which honors soldiers who died on D-Day by providing high school students with an immersive learning experience in Normandy, France. Since their father’s passing in 2021, the Small siblings have continued the family’s enthusiastic support of activities at the GW Museum and the Normandy Institute. Along with their impressive professional paths, Mr. Albert “Sonny” H. Small, Jr., Mr. James “Jimmy” Small, CCAS BA ’84 and Mrs. Susan Small Savitsky have maintained a shared ethos of generosity through the Albert & Shirley Small Family Foundation and numerous other charitable ventures.
